AS CENTRAL BANKS become lenders of first resort, the jury is still out in Asia, where banks have been spared the massive write-downs now afflicting others in the US and Europe. One view emerging in Asia is that much of the world is collapsing into an L-shaped recession, but intra-Asia trade, the sheer size of China’s economy, and renewed activity of cashed-up Japanese banks may see Asia escape with sub-par three per cent growth.
