Opportunity for Australia in India’s $3.5 billion cleanup of River Ganga

July 8, 2015

SYDNEY - India’s mission to clean the 2,500 kilometre Ganga River opens up significant opportunities for Australian engineering, environmental and water management firms, according to Austrade.

The Indian Government has pledged US$3.5 billion over five years to clean the Ganga, the world’s most populous river basin, supporting some 400 million people in India. The World Bank has also provided US$1 billion towards rejuvenating India’s holiest river.
Immediate priorities for the Clean Ganga mission include building sewerage infrastructure in 118 towns; setting up water monitoring stations and effluent treatment plants; tapping drains; developing and managing the river front at seven locations; conserving aquatic life; and establishing capacity building and community awareness projects.
Austrade says the project needs experts in wastewater treatment and management; water treatment infrastructure design; environmental management; water quality monitoring; and biodiversity conservation. www.austrade.gov.au  (ATI).
